We have an exciting opportunity for a CLPS Data Scientist to join the team with our Science & Exploration Division.

The CLPS Data Scientist will:
  • Provide expertise to the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) which works with several American companies to deliver science and technology to the lunar surface.
  • Work with NASA Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division/NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) to navigate the export of data from all CLPS missions.
  • Upload data to the Planetary Data System (PDS) in the correct format.
  • Understand the varying ownership of data across providers and missions along with options available for public access of such data.
  • Work across NASA Headquarters, commercial providers, and all individual CLPS project scientists on the development of repeatable processes and procedures to enable the timely export of mission data to the public.
  • Work with large data sets and collaborate with technical staff on data quality and standards compliance.
  • Interact with scientists, engineers, managers in a highly dynamic and occasionally time-critical environment.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requisition Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.
  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in a related area or experience in the field.
  • Ability to navigate NASA administrative structure to create new repeatable procedures for the handling of mission data.
  • Some technical knowledge about the nature of mission data. The candidate will be communicating with programmers and other technical staff.
  • Implement SMD 'open data' directive in the context of CLPS missions.
  • Familiarity with PDS mission data ingestion .
Requisition Preferences:
  • BS in computer science, data science, data analytics, math, or a closely related field.
  • Prior experience working with NASA and/or the Federal Government.
  • Prior policy development experience.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
